Rest …Vision

I am learning what it means to rest. Ever since returning from vacation  I’ve been catching up. These days there is a lot  happening in Richmond for work, professional development, social political issues, cultural celebrations, art activities, outreach ministries. Of course many of them are happening on the same day. Remember to breathe… So I kind of over did…

Online magazine

Happy to share for Fall 2016  I am the featured artist  for an online publication called “So to Speak.” It’s a feminist + language + art literary publication based out of George Mason University. This happened through a colleague that I just met this summer and word of mouth to the publication’s art editor. In the visual…

Getting away…island trip

I haven’t been blogging because I went on a trip to the Dominican Republic and my heart is still there! I just returned and that feeling is still fresh. I went with my best friend and other very cool people. It was our first time there, we flew to Punta Cana and stayed at the Breathless Resort….

Developing a project

As  I develop my 5th portrait I’m also looking back at the process. The act of  documenting the various steps along the way can be tedious. But I’m relieved with how simple it actually is, the challenge is remembering to take a picture before moving on. This project (a series of 9) began late in May, and today marks 3 months thus far.  I’m glad to…

Painted this weekend

Staying motivated…staying motivated… staying motivated…I am motivated…I’m motivated.  Yes I needed to repeat that. This weekend I painted (a sigh of relief). I’m not always a happy painter,  and the goal is not to feel good. It’s to get the expression across, push the technique, experiment with color, and pay close attention to the light….

Art for Kids

Although I teach college level, I love the energy of kids! Before & after grad school I worked as an art specialist/instructor with summer camps and after school programs all around Richmond and in Glen Allen. I have to give props to all the PreK -12 grade teachers out there. You guys & gals rock!…

I keep hearing about Relationship Goals

Well, in continuing the conversation from yesterday…Romare Bearden marrying a prolific dancer Nanette Rohan. I was just as elated to find out (maybe a few years ago) that Jacob Lawrence was married to Gwendolyn Knight. Jacob Lawrence was a modern painter, in the 40’s known for the series The Migration. This wasn’t the first time he depicted a historical event, but the…

Romare Bearden is his Name

It’s been a long time since my last blog post. I have no excuse… didn’t want to write about mindless things. My desire is to share good content related to creative and  artistic activities. Hey Richmonders have you heard about the upcoming exhibition  Romare Bearden:Vision and Activism. It’s opening on September 13th at the Black History…

Some days R slow

Some days are slow and steady…that I’ve learned to go with. When it’s time to fly I’m ready, but there’s nothing wrong with walking every now and then. Today was a walking day. Working with layers of watercolor is interesting. I find myself repeating the act of laying down washes and then taking them up. Of course altering…

Danced around the world

This Saturday morning I was determined to make it to Dogtown Dance Theatre. I knew  I had to be barefoot, full of energy, and ready to go. There is this Community Dance class that attracts a great amount of creative people from all over Richmond. The music is full of polyrhythms from places like: Jamaica,…

Film Talk

I witnessed an epiphany today, some people call it an “Aha moment.” A student came into my office for advising and noticed a pattern in the courses taken. This student was like, what do I need to do to get on track? The talk was so focused that the student began talking about graduation! In that moment I saw…

Exhibition still up until September 30th

Back at work doing a lot of administrative work: typing for days, sending out announcements, situating new colleagues, and emailing. A few of the students I did see had a good summer, and were smiling about this coming fall semester. Classes officially start Thursday! Here I will simply announce in order to view my exhibition and…
